Clients often come to me looking to achieve certain outcomes like growing their businesses, improving relationships, dissolving limiting beliefs, transforming their lifestyle, reinventing themselves, losing weight, optimizing sleep, decreasing stress, or increasing performance.
Things like that.
Those are their goals.
But those things are never really the goal. It’s never truly what they’re after.
The goal is always to feel better in some way.
This can be revealed through a series of “why” questions.
Let’s take weight loss for an example. I used to own a fitness and wellness center and this was a common goal.
However, the goal with weight loss is never weight loss. It’s not simply seeing a lower number on the scale. The goal is what people think weight loss will provide them.
More specifically, the goal is the feeling they think it will provide them.
Usually there would be the notion that losing weight would provide them acceptance and love, both from others and themselves (which is where it was really lacking). Since the need for love and acceptance is a primal, core need for people from the time they’re brought into this world- this goal had a lot of layers to it.
Other times they believed losing weight would provide them with more fulfillment and enjoyment in their lives, such as by being able to move around without as much pain, reverse problematic health conditions, engage in some sort of physical activity, or keep up with the children.
In either case, it all boils down to wanting to feel certain ways.
“I want to lose weight.” Why?
“So I can look better.” Why do you want that?
“So I can have more confidence.” Why is that important?
“So I can stop holding myself back.” Why is that important?
“Because I want to do more of the things that I enjoy.” Why?
“So I can feel good about myself and my life.” There it is.
With a few questions, the goal of losing weight has morphed into the gaol of feeling good about oneself and one’s life. Losing weight, it turns out, is the primary path they believe will take them to what they really want.
You can follow this same practice in your own life. Simply interrogate why you want what you want. Investigate what you’re after. Question your goals, especially the one’s you’ve never questioned before. Especially the one’s that seem obvious.
See what you find.
What’s the unspoken goal beneath the spoken ones?
And, most importantly, what feelings are you after?
You’ll soon realize a powerful truth: Everything we want is a feeling.
So is everything we don’t want, but that’s a conversation for another time.
For now, realize deeply that most of our goals are just means to an end, and the end is always a feeling.
And the feeling we are after is typically different or “better” than the one we are experiencing.
And that feeling is always something we’d describe as “good.”
But what is a “good” feeling?
Well, obviously one that feels good.
And what feelings feel good?
Feelings that are of an elevated frequency.
Feelings that are harmonious and coherent.
Feelings that are aligned with our natural, innate well-being.
Feelings that match the vibrational range of Source energy.
If you boil most goals down to their essence- the goal is usually more security, joy, happiness, peace, love, or freedom. Feelings like that.
Take money, for example. Why do so many people want more money?
It’s not the actual number in their bank account. It’s what that number represents. Maybe it means financial security, providing a sense of certainty and safety people naturally seek. Maybe it means being able to go on beautiful vacations, providing a sense of joy, amusement, and variety to one’s life. Maybe it’s to pay for a loved one to further their education or get out of debt, providing a sense of connection and love. Maybe it’s to donate to an important charity, providing the feeling of contribution and fulfillment. Maybe it’s to afford exclusive, desired things that makes them stand out, providing a sense of significance and self-esteem (fabricated, temporary self-esteem built on a house of cards…. but still).
So the goal is not more money, it’s really a feeling that we believe more money will provide.
Again, we see how the the surface goal of “more money” is really just something we believe will give us what we really want.
Alright, so we’ve established that what we are truly after in our lives are feelings, and we can say that the feelings we are after are of a higher frequency than those we are experiencing now. That is to say, they feel better. That’s why we want them.
If they didn’t feel better, we wouldn’t want them. That’s also why we don’t want things that we believe will make us feel worse.
That’s also why we sometimes settle for things that temporarily feel good.
We all want to feel good, but have different ways of getting there. Some of these ways are destructive, some are constructive. In the behavioral health field, we refer to this as adaptive or maladaptive. Some behaviors support our health, others deteriorate our health. You know this.
To feel better some people eat ice cream. Some people exercise. Some people take action to solve a problem, others avoid their problems. Some people take drugs or use alcohol. Some people have sex. Some people watch television. Some people shop.
These are all just ways to feel better, even for just a moment.
So we all want to feel better. We all want to experience just how good we can feel. We all want to embody these higher frequency emotions and elevated states of being.
And guess what?
We are all capable of experiencing them.
No, not after we get what we want.
We are all capable of experiencing them right now.
As vibrational beings with creative power, we can deliberately engineer any feeling we wish to experience. We an do this at anytime.
We can shape our focus, our thoughts, our imagination, our self-talk, or any other contents of our awareness to manifest the very feelings we are seeking.
We can do this now, if you’d like. It will only take a moment.
What is it that you want? This isn’t a trick question. You can just freely think about whatever it is that you desire to be, do, or have. There may be several things coming to mind. For the purposes of this, do your best to narrow it down to one thing. One desired outcome.
Now, go ahead and focus on the experience of having it right now. Feel the feeling of your wishes already fulfilled.
Really soak this in.
What would life be like? Imagine it. What thoughts would you be thinking? How would you be breathing? How would you feel in your body?
Experience all of that right now.
I’ll give you some time.
Congratulations. You’ve just experienced what you really want.
You’ve just exercised your creative power.
You’ve also just gotten a taste of self-sufficient emotional nourishment—providing yourself that which you are seeking in the world.
Now, you may feel as if this is just a game. You’ve likely been conditioned to believe you’re tricking yourself by feeling as though your wishes are fulfilled, since your wishes may not be manifest in the material world.
But I believe the real self-deception is in believing that what you want is contingent upon some particular set of conditions being met in some imaginary future… especially when what you really want is available to you now.
That’s not to mention the power of this simple creative practice. You’ve just aligned your frequency with your desires, which is the key to drawing them to you and allowing them into your life.
My entire career has been dedicated to human transformation, and there is something very counterintuitive that I have noticed within several areas of this art and science.
Once you embody the emotions of your desired outcomes, you begin to attract them into your life, because you are in vibrational alignment with them.
You begin to live differently, and as you live differently, you experience different results… results that are aligned with what you want because they stem from you living as though what you want is already yours.
Live from this state, and you will establish a point of attraction for your dreams.
Quick recap:
Everything you want is a feeling.
That feeling is available to you now.
So, everything you want is available now.
Live from that state, and you’ll begin to see it reflected back in the world.
Enjoy.
